MDSC is a small, invitation-only membership club, and we keep it local: members live within 30 miles of the Walnut Creek Post Office. To join the club, a current member starts the process by sponsoring the prospective member, who then completes an application to get on the waiting list, stays overnight at the cabin with their sponsor (to learn the procedures for opening and closing the cabin), and attends a general meeting to speak with at least one board member.
Like any club, to truly live in harmony there are some common sense rules to follow. Members serve on committees and must attend at least two of the quarterly general meetings. Members also select one "work weekend" each year that they can attend. (Is it really work though, when you forge lasting relationships and end the days with barbecue and beers?)
Our annual dues and nightly costs are extremely low due to our "all-hands on deck" work ethic and the generous help from our members, who often donate their special skills throughout the year. Nights at the cabin work out to about $15 per person, a steal to be in the heart of the Lake Tahoe area: a 5-minute walk to Royal Gorge Cross-Country Ski Resort, a 5-minute drive to the historic Sugar Bowl Ski Resort, and only a few more minutes drive to many other Lake Tahoe-area resorts.
The club is a social community of like-minded lovers of the outdoors. Each season brings its special activities when staying at the cabin. Winter of course, shines with winter sports at the the world-class area resorts. Ski season often extends through spring, ushering in a wealth of reawakening flora and fauna (baby bald eagles, anyone?) Summer quickly fills up with days at alpine lakes, spectacular hiking trails, bird watching, fishing, rafting, mountain biking, the list goes on. And who doesn't love a brisk fall evening by the fire, after catching that elusive brown trout?
In addition to evenings by the fire after skiing, hiking, fishing or swimming, each year we host a popular summer party and holiday winter get-together featuring a classic white elephant gift exchange. Add all that to the various social gatherings back home, and you'll just begin to understand what a special thing the Mt. Diablo Ski Club is.
